No Longer the Captain

Posted: June 19, 2017 in thought stream, urban poems

At dverse tonight it’s Quadrille time set by Kim to celebrate the 50th anniversary of The Beatles iconic Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album. Consequently the poem is to include the word ‘pepper’.

He peppers his conversations
with her name, all the time
saying she is now of no consequence.

His favourite story is when they
flew to Oslo. Last minute
to see the northern lights.

He is anchored in a deep water harbour,
still not casting off.
No longer captain of his ship.

  1. Oh, denial at play. He peppers his conversation with her but she is of no consequence? Don’t think so. A tinge of sadness here.

  2. Grace says:

Sad and filled with regrets ~ Would love the backstory ~

  3. We do need false bravado- but it’s hard to fool anyone,

  4. sanaarizvi says:

Such a palpable tinge of sadness here.. sigh…

  5. thotpurge says:

Aah the pretense of nonchalance, of being in control… but who cares as long as one can see the northern lights! Hopefully someday!!!

  6. Love’ll do that to you. Nice work!

  7. That first stanza, so sad and relatable.

  8. othermary says:

This is oh-so well done. Clear, but subtle.
