Hiding in Shadows

Posted: March 16, 2017 in urban poems

Host at dverse tonight is Bjorn and continues the series on art movements. Today we have to compile a poem in the form of impressionism –  which in art focussed on modern life, colour more than detail, visual effect of light. So I sat in my favourite coffee shop …..

Light leaps in
from the street,

patchworks faces
in dark corners,
seeps over
lemon wood tables,
splashes coffee that’s
necromancer black.

Baristas flicker across
a stone coloured floor
and hands are caught
in a keyboard blur.
Platinum hair swings
as she leans forward.

Red ceiling lamps
smudge the eyes
but light
can’t find the shadows.

My work on the poem at the coffee shop

Comments
  1. This is perfect… I can see the immediateness of the scene.. I feel present in the coffee shop

  2. frankhubeny says:

I liked the “necromancer black” coffee. It makes me want to refill my cup and wonder what dark magic I’m consuming. I also liked the photo of the poem being constructed in the coffee shop. I could make out the circled “necromancer” which convinced me this really was your poem.

  3. Candy says:

Ah, this is a “painting” in words.

  4. For a minute there, I was in Starbucks, and wondering if the necromancer coffee would give me voodoo powers! I enjoyed your word painting!

  5. Kathy Reed says:

Your inspiration came from a coffee shop at a table with notebook and pen;)…”lemon wood tables” and “red ceiling lamps smudge the eyes” sealed the poem.

  6. Singledust says:

love the sitting in the shadows withe even blacker coffee and allowing the darkness hide me as I watch people – the descriptions you wrote made me part of the landscape – lovely!

  7. Grace says:

Those shadows stand out for me as well as necromancer black. You brought me there Paul ~

  8. You hurled me right into a scene at Starbucks or wherever with the details and colors in this one. I’d like a decaf soy latte, s’l vous plait.

  9. Truedessa says:

Lemon wood tables – I like that image there is freshness in your words..

  10. sarahbawden says:

Warm, bustling, but not intrusive. It’s like that peaceful feeling when you are surrounded by comfortable strangers all working toward a common goal.

  11. Can’t beta a good coffee shop for a write…and this is one…tasty looking biccies too…something more to the platinum blond maybe than meets the eye?

  12. ZQ says:

    Very interesting read.
    Thanks

  13. Mish says:

I love the blending of colousr, the overlaps…this is so true to the prompt, making me want to take another attempt at Bjorn’s challenge. The last stanza is brilliant!

  14. Imelda says:

You brought me inside a coffeeshop with this piece. 🙂
