Panic Of Paths

Tonight at Mish has introduced us to Canadian artist Ally Saunders and asked us to select one of her paintings as a base for a poem.

A panic of paths
spider through woods.
There’s no strategy
they just flee
in all directions.
Flowing blood red,
hunting for a way out.
They start filling the sky.
An anxious sun
watches them come
as Earth melts
into the universe.

Many Paths by Ally Saunders.
You can catch her work here

  1. Grace says:

I like that word “spider” as a verb. My impression is of earth melting and being devastated, and thrown back into the universe ~ Good one Paul ~

  2. Glenn Buttkus says:

Nothing in life, or in the universe, is strictly linear, not the structure of the atom or the theory of evolution–it’s all diverse paths running amok like swollen angry inexorable veins. See where your poem drove me? Smile.

  3. frankhubeny says:

Interesting idea of the earth melting into the universe. The roads do seem like blood looking for a way out and reaching the sky.

  4. Mish says:

I like the personification of these paths, the chaos of it all. Just when I thought the hardest part was choosing one. Yikes.

  5. The panic in this is palpable.. the sense of impeding disaster is strengthened with the use of spider as a verb.

  6. maria says:

Great piece! And I love the title… 🙂

  7. I feel the panic in this – the way it rushes headlong.

  8. A panic of paths.. great image! Good write, Paul!

  9. A “panic of paths” is perfect way to describe it and of course the spider made me think of “The Hobbit” but then again I guess that makes me a bit of a nerd.

  10. Loved it…and echo all the content above re ‘spider’ and ‘panic’ Wonderful wordplay

  11. sree says:

this is wonderful…its so abstract and so meaningful in that way…so much to think…great!
