At First Light

Posted: January 30, 2017 in nature poems, thought stream

Today at we are writing a Quadrille. The challenge is to write a poem of exactly 44 words and this time include the word dawn.

Moonlight will stop
eating your shadows
and you can no longer
touch the stars
in the river.
Embers have died out
under a black cauldron
inhabited by bats
and your dreams.
The mist light of dawn
reveals what darkness
conjured up in the night.

  1. Love this Paul. I have a sense that the saying that “it’s always darkest before dawn” would fit your poem

  2. blogoratti says:

Nothing like the first light, where life and dreams collide.

  3. erbiage says:

Love the way you tie the night into the day

  4. Janice says:

    You’ve created a deep darkness–feels a bit ominous—broken by the mist light of dawn…very impactfull…(great photo as well 🙂

  5. It’s eerie. I’m not sure what’s going to be there when the light breaks through. Very atmospheric.

  6. Misky says:

    Tantalisingly dark.

  7. May it all have been a nightmare and day dawn bright and happy

  8. Grace says:

I look forward to that mist light of dawn to dispel the darkness~

  9. wolfsrosebud says:

intriguing… i like your word combinations… so many pictures went through my mind… nice

I liked the idea of the dawn revealing what last night’s darkness conjured.

  11. thotpurge says:

Beautiful images here of moonlight eating shadows and cauldrons of dreams…

  12. There have been times for me when the approach of morning is so black and gray I fear what the lamplight sun will reveal.

  13. rosemawrites says:

oooh. that last line is so true. 🙂

  14. kim881 says:

I love the imagery in this poem, especially in the lines:
