City that never sleeps

Posted: May 8, 2012 in Poetry, urban poems

It’s that time of the week … dversepoets.com poets pub is open so enjoy some quality work and enjoy a glass or two with us

Chiswick flyover is draped in jewellery.
A string of red rubies stretching away
forever in the distance and coming
from the other direction diamonds
glittering against a black five o clock sky.

Termites burrowing in an out of the city
are marked by their fire-fly lights.

Inhabitants of a restless collision
of cultures forever beavering and
weaving in a sleepless hive.

An intense power, burning
and flaring skywards.
Energy folding in on itself.
A constant friction.

A chaos of welding sparks sending
arcs across the city.
Criss-crossing over streets,
glass towers, shops, restaurants
theatres and the river.

A shimmering bracelet
snaking through its centre.

This web of light snares all in its jewelled embrace.
This nuclear fission burns a hole in blackest space.

A nebula blaring out of an island
pointing at a city trapped within itself.

nice really cool stanza as you capture not just the city but its inhabitants…really nice creative descriptors too on how you view the city from on high…the bracelet through, nice…enjoyed the perspective…

    Wonderful descriptions throughout!

  3. Love this! And I was going to comment on the same stanza as Brian Miller … “forever beavering and/weaving” is such a great string of sounds.

You have taken the chaos from that fabulous image and have woven some truly beautiful work. Fantastic presentation! And Happy OpenLinkNight of course!

    “Inhabitants of a restless collision
    of cultures forever beavering and
    weaving in a sleepless hive.”

This just sounds delicious. Delightful. It drips with depth. And I really need to tone down my alliterative allusions today. Well written!

  8. Really nice treatment of a city scape, love the opening stanza too.
